Really, how big of a bother can it be? I heard it taught a few years ago to teenagers that, well, they really should try to read the Bible every day. Just find any easy-to-read translation of the Bible and read a little bit. But don’t sweat it too much—if you should, you know, sleep in and run out of time, don’t worry about it.
I know the guy’s motive was good; he just wanted the teenagers to start reading the Bible. But I can just see C. S. Lewis’s demon Screwtape hard at work dethroning the Bible in the listeners’ minds. Dozens of students walked out that day feeling okay, because of what they’d just heard, with God’s Word on a minimum priority level in their lives.
How about this… Well, you should really try to eat something every day. Just find any nice-sounding, easy-to-swallow something and nibble a little. But don’t sweat it too much—if you should, you know, run out of time to eat, don’t worry about it. But really, how big of a bother can eating be?
No way. If we don’t eat, we starve. Big priority. Our spirits are no different; if we don’t eat, we spiritually starve. In the same way that we’ve got to eat every day, it is absolutely vital that we are in God’s Word every day. I’m not talking legalism, but the Bible should definitely be at the top of our priority list. It’s a matter of life and death.
